I’ve decided that this is how I want to look by the end of the year! Before you laugh, it’s the beautiful powerful creature charging after the surf ‘look’ that I’m going after! So no old nag cracks please – especially from big brother Raymond, who has a thing about me and horses. In fairness he’s cross at all things equine because the last time I fell off one, I nearly broke my back. But I’m grand now, my back is fine, and I’m all set for a brand new challenge.
TRI10 is a group of ten new ‘triers’ who are aiming to complete ten triathlons in one year, raising €10,000 in funds for local charities along the way.
TRI10 was formed by TV3 Weatherman and super fit athlete Deric Ó h’Artagáin whose passion and enthusiasm has fired us all up to do amazing things this summer.
I was ‘miming’ to half of Dublin, hanging off a pillar at College Green, with my hands painted red and yellow, when I found myself telling Deric that I had once done a ‘Tri-a-Tri’ and perhaps I could ‘up the challenge’ to do a longer distance. That was around the time I realised that I had just said yes to doing TEN triathlons in a year! Deric has this way of sweeping you along in a tsunami of positivity. Well I have my lovely Trek bike, I’ve already been swimming in the sea this year, and I’ve kept up my running since doing the 10k with Aware and TV3’s Midday before Christmas. So now all I have to do is put them all together… Simples? Right?
Our first Triathlon is in April so we’ve got a good run at it, so to speak. I am hoping you will follow our progress. Perhaps this is the year that YOU decide to ‘Tri-a-Tri’?
Triathlon Ireland (the governing body) assures me that this is one of the fastest growing sports in Ireland and you don’t have to be superfit to start either. You need a bike and helmet, and a wetsuit for open water events. After that, you just need a pair of runners, swimsuit, goggles and T-shirt and shorts from the back of the wardrobe. You can buy the ‘go faster runners’ later, when you’ve got a few races under your belt.
TRI10 have a FB page and you can find us on Twitter #TRI10 @TRI10_
Follow us for updates on our progress; diet and training tips and advice on gear. We newbies will report on every stage of our journey. Come with us. Participate or support, but let’s all #KeepMoving forward in 2016.
